Trivia:
At the beginning of the movie, the map of Europe shows several states and kingdoms of that era. However, in Germany, a fictional kingdom west of Bavaria called "Wurzburg" is shown (slightly misspelled, as the original spelling is "Würzburg"), the name of a Franconian city where major parts of the movie were shot.

Goofs:
Anachronisms: In the big room in the palace with a map of Europe covering the floor, several models of armies are placed on the map. However, those placed in and around Sweden have the modern Swedish blue and yellow cross flag as their banner. This flag wasn't adopted as a Swedish war flag until the 18th century and as the national flag until the 20th century.

Plot Outline: A Los Angeles narcotics detective (Perkins) clashes with a small-town Utah Sheriff (Conaway) while investigating his girlfriend's mysterious abduction thirty miles outside Kanab, Utah.
Plot: A young man proves his worth in order to belong to the French squad of the musketeers.

Movie Quotes: Rochefort: Milady, it is a great pleasure to see you again. Cardinal Richelieu asks that I give you his warm greetings.
Milady: Thank you for your greetings, Monsieur Rochefort, but there's something else you can give me.
Rochefort: First let me see what you have brought for me.
Milady: [Milady pulls out a hidden box containing the queen's diamonds] Ah, in this box lies the means with which Cardinal Richelieu can convice the King that the Queen is not worthy to sit on the throne of France with him.
Rochefort: [laughs softly] Excellent, with the Queen out of the way, the Cardinal will be the only person in France to whom the King can turn for advice.
Milady: Hm, and to no doubt the Cardinal's advice will hasten the day when the king himself loses his crown; and how long will it take after that day before the Cardinal takes the throne for himself?
Rochefort: The Cardinal will remember your part in all of this, Milady.
[Rochefort inspects the contents inside the box and gasps silently]
Rochefort: The Queen's diamonds which the King gave her on their wedding day!
Milady: How foolish of the Queen to have betrayed the King of France by sending the diamonds to the English Duke of Buckingham.
Rochefort: Haha! And how clever of you to steal them from Buckingham. The Queen will feel the executioner's axe once the King realizes she's in love with the Duke of our enemy, England.
Milady: And now Monsieur, I believe there is the matter of my payment.
    Rochefort: Payment in full, Milady.
[Rochefort hands the box containing the diamonds to Milady]
Milady: [gasps loudly] You- you mean the diamonds are for me?
Rochefort: With the compliments of Cardinal Richelieu.
Milady: Well, I- I never thought... How can I express my thanks?
Rochefort: By returning to England until the Queen has been executed and taking the diamonds with you so there's not a chance of them being found.
Milady: As you wish, Monsieur Rochefort! I'll sail on the evening tide for England.
Rochefort: Then I bid you farewell, Milady.

Plot: The three best of the disbanded Musketeers - Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - join a young hotheaded would-be-Musketeer, D'Artagnan, to stop the Cardinal Richelieu's evil plot: to form an alliance with enemy England by way of the mysterious Milady. Rochefort, the Cardinal's right-hand man, announces the official disbanding of the King's Musketeers. Three, however, refuse to throw down their swords - Athos the fighter and drinker, Porthos the pirate and lover, and Aramis the priest and poet. Arriving in Paris to join the Musketeers, D'Artagnan uncovers the Cardinal's plans, and the four set out on a mission to protect King and Country.

Movie Quotes: Porthos: You, boy, are arrogant, hot tempered and entirely too bold. I like that. Reminds me of me.
Aramis: Don't encourage him. By helping us the boy has made himself an outlaw as well.
Athos: Not if he leaves Paris right now.
    D'Artagnan: I can't leave now, I just got here.
Porthos: Go home. Find a wench, raise fat babies, live a good long life.
D'Artagnan: What about the motto of the Musketeers? All for one and one for all.
Athos: Wake up boy. The Musketeers are just a dream.

    • Charlie Sheen was originally sought for the role of Porthos.
    • Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell and Oliver Platt all endured six weeks of fencing and riding lessons. Charlie Sheen had to miss all this out as he was then embroiled in the filming of Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993).

    • Robert Taylor and Ricardo Montalban and Sydney Greenstreet were originally cast as Athos, Aramis and Richelieu.
    • Fearing pressure from church groups, MGM had the script refer to Richelieu to as prime minister rather than Cardinal and almost all traces of him being a cardinal or a man of the church have been removed (although Jean Heremans is still credited as "Cardinal Guard"), even though other versions of this story kept Richelieu a cardinal without any repercussions.
    • Lana Turner originally accepted a studio suspension in preference to playing Lady de Winter because she considered Milady a secondary character.
