100% JunkFebruary 10, 2010 Eaglechick This worked great----for about 3 months. Now, it won't play half the time and when it does, the DVDs skip, stop for no reason, etc. When we place the DVDs on our other DVD player, they all work fine. Also, IF by chance the DVD decides to play, this player takes a LONG time to finally play. Even brand new movies fresh out of the box won't play on this thing one day and will play fine the next. DO NOT buy this item, spend you money on something else.
piece of junk dont waste your time or moneyDecember 2, 2009 Dvd man this player never quite qorked well and I returned it several times to get one that worked. When it did work it never really recorded properly and now the DVD player just will not work at all. Its basically a $200 vhs player. What a waste. Samsung will not do anything to fix the problem either. They said they were sending firmware to me and never did. Horrible service.

I have had this player for about 2 years now (amazing it has lasted this long). About 7-8 months after we bought it, we would randomly get 'disc cannot be played' errors while trying to play DVDs (and this is regular store bought/rented movies). Didn't matter how clean the disc was. Now we are lucky to get a DVD to play at all, even the DVD lens cleaner won't load :p.
I do have to add, I have another Samsung DVD player in our spare bedroom, and it has the same problems (suppose we should have tried another brand in the first place). So it seems to be a frequent problem for this brand, would strongly advise buying something else!!

I am 55 yrs. old and I am a digital photographer. I bought this Samsung VR357 to put VHS movies onto DVD, both single and dual layer. Out of all the software, cameras, recorders, etc. I have ever bought in my life this is the worst piece of junk I have ever owned and the problems were right out of the box. I have had the following problems:
*Dual Layer disc fails to intialize properly - disc in the garbage.
*Dual Layer disc fails to finalize properly - disc in the garbage and hours of recording utterly wasted.
*Recording stops in the middle of recording, the machine shuts off - disc in the garbage and hours of recording time wasted.
*Recording stops in the middle, machine stays on, disc won't update info - disc in the garbage - hours of recording wasted.
*Fails to recognize VHS tapes - you get sound and no picture - fiddling around eventually brings it back - more time wasted.
*Regular DVD-R fails to finalize - more recording time wasted.
Buy this junk at your own risk. I was so frustrated I almost took a hammer to it. How Samsung can put out this garbage is utterly beyond me. If they read this they owe me a full refund. I won't hold my breath waiting. You can pick up this $175 machine used on Ebay for $30 which tells what others think of it as well.
New news 1 week later:
Now it won't record onto a new batch of Memorex DVD-R's I bought at all whereas before it did that pretty well. The new batch of DVD+R DL mostly work but today I tried to record VHS to DVD 3 times and the machine stopped recording and shut off at various times - more DVD's in the garbage and time wasted. The 4th DVD failed to intialize properly and now I'm trying to record that same VHS tape onto DVD for the 5th time as I write this; I'm burning incense and chanting to help.
Samsung should issue a recall on this one. Their HQ never responded to my email.
Throwaway ItemAugust 3, 2009 Joe the Plumber(Baltimore, MD USA) I used this Samsung unit lightly for a year and it worked. Instruction manual was cryptic, hard to figure out. After 12 months it stopped recording DVD's and is now simply another bit of electronic trash. I am sorry I bought it and will stay away from the Samsung brand in the future.
