Ordered this item for Christmas from A company called Apc-Discs-Books. Boy was that A wrong move that I regretted doing. Product didn't work all I got was sound no picture. Then when I emailed seller they tried to say I was getting an attitude because I wanted A refund. So I contacted Amazon but that didn't help they acted like they didn't have much control over the matter even though I failed A claim. Lesson learned if something sounds too good to be true it parable is.

the Good:
This is my second Home DVD recorder and I experienced no bugs in the operation of the Toshiba. The price at 140 is excellent for this quality. It reads any dvd from any recorder I've tried, including several which won't read on other players and recorders. It has excellent flexibility in editing, including a way to cut out unwanted segments of your program. I have a 47" HDTV and the HDMI output is excellent in HD modes, this recorder does a good job of upconverting.
the Bad:
The title editing is a little lame and time consuming, though it works correctly. The remote control is all black and complex, making it hard to find the correct buttons sometimes. Different discs DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+RW are strangely limited in the menu choices for recording, depending on which type of disc you are using. The DVD-RW has full functionality in the menu. I don't know if it is just the DR400 or if others have these limitations. PCs don't. My old ILO DVD Recorder didn't have the functionality to begin with. Read the manual to see what I'm talking about.
Overall:
The best Home Entertainment DVD recorder I've seen rivaling a PC in functionality, except for speed and software. I think this product is sold out and I'm glad I got a new one.
Great DVR For Transferring VHS/MiniDV to DVDSDecember 9, 2009 D. Rapp Bought this unit refurbished several weeks ago and haven't had any problems with it. I bought it to transfer family videos over to DVDs and the unit has done this perfectly. The unit is pretty simple to operate.

First off, people have commented that this machine is slow. This is a vast understatement. The word I'd use is "glacial". When you turn the unit on you have to wait until it loads the disk before you can do anything with it. This may be a matter of a several seconds but the recorder I had before, a Panasonic, was ready to go instantly. A small matter but frustrating just the same.
Another difference from my previous recorder, the Toshiba needs to be turned *off* for scheduled recording events to work. If you forget to turn it off the recording doesn't happen.
And one reason you might forget to turn it off: HDMI, composite, and s-video don't work with the unit off. We have it set up so that our cable connects from the cable box to the recorder and the recorder connects to the TV with an HDMI cable *and* a three-wire RF cable. With the recorder off there is only a signal through the RF cable.
Our Panasonic had an "instant skip" button - each time you pressed the button, one time or 60 or whatever, it would instantly skip that many minutes on the disk during playback. This unit also has an instant skip feature but each press only skips ahead 30 seconds and you are limited to 6 presses - 3 minutes - at a time. And, to make this worse, this doesn't "instantly" skip but just fast forwards. Again, glacial.
If the power goes out, even for a fraction of a second as it did for us recently, you have to reset the timer program. We missed one of our scheduled recordings because of this. This wasn't the case with our Panasonic.
There are some other glitches that I suspect are machine-related but haven't pinned down yet and would probably be isolated to my particular unit, so they're not relevant to a general review, annoying as they are.
We bought this to replace our old machine, when it finally broke down, because it was less expensive than the Panasonic. You get what you pay for or, in this case, you get less. Toshiba is off my list for electronics.

First off, I don't have an HDTV any more--so I cannot discuss the HDMI / 16:9 / 720p / 1080p features of this set. But I do get a lot of use out of the timer programmed recording, as my cousin and I use this set to record sermons from DIRECTV channels like GODTV, Daystar, TBN and others. The SLP quality format lets us get eight solid hours of teaching per disc, which we can then copy and distribute to others who are hungry for the Word.
We had a Cyberhome DVD Recorder but it eventually kicked it (after only four or five months of usage) so we were hesitant about finding another set... but after checking reviews on this model, we were content with the price and went ahead and ordered one. We've been blessed so far! This Toshiba is a great recorder with a dark, handsome appearance and nice remote.
The only negative that comes to mind is that upon inserting a DVD it seems to take longer to load the disc than in other players. That's a small price to pay for a nice set less than $100.00.
