Product Description This elegant full Multi DVD Recorder offers the flexibility of Full Multi Format recording, plus the practicality of Dual Layer Recording. Archiving family movies is easy using the front DV input; and TV programs can immediately be captured with the "1 sec." Quick Recording feature.
Amazon.com Product Description Standing less than 2.5 inches tall, Samsung's stylishly black DVD-R145 is one of the most powerful entertainment recording and playback devices available today. It offers the widest assortment of DVD recording compatibility, featuring DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, and re-writable DVD-RAM as well as Dual-Layer DVD+/-R--enabling you to store up to 8.5 GB of video on these two-sided discs. Additionally, the DVD-R145 provides a time-slip function when recording onto DVD-RAM discs--enabling you to pause or skip backwards/forwards through a recording that's active.
The DVD-R145 is also an "upconverting" DVD player, which boosts the standard 480 lines of resolution from a DVD disc up to a high-def 1080i (interlaced) picture. To produce an upconverted picture, your high-def TV must have an HDMI connection (and HDCP support)--the 720p/1080i choice is only available when using the HDMI cable (which is not included). Also note that the DVD-HD1080 is not a high-definition DVD player (i.e., not to be confused with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players, which play specially formatted high definition discs), so it will work with your existing DVD library.
A front-panel DV (FireWire IEEE 1394) input enables you to connect the family video camcorder and edit and record footage directly to a DVD disc--all via a single cable and without losing image quality. The EVQ (Enhanced Video Quality) feature provides sharper images and truer color reproduction for both movies and home videos. This unit also offers CM (commercial) advance, enabling you to skip ads from recorded TV programming recorded. Other features include CM (commercial) advance, STB (set-top box) control, and DivX playback. In addition to its ability to play back all current DVD formats, it's also compatible with CD-R/RW discs and MP3 audio and JPEG image files.
You can program recording via the timer, or choose easy one-touch recording (initiating playback at 30 minutes and adding 30 minutes with each additional press of the button, up to the available disc time or 240 minutes, whichever is sooner). Chapters are created when you record your favorite TV show or video clips from a camcorder onto a DVD disc. The chapters are automatically created, which eliminates wasted time searching the whole DVD to find the right spot. Up to 99 titles can be recorded onto one disc. With the simple and easy edit function menu, you can delete, copy, rename, and lock, among other things. You can also create a playlist and edit video in a specific sequence.
It offers the following connection options:
HDMI: 1 out
Composite video: 1 out
S-Video: 1 out
Component video: 1 out
Firewire: 1 in
RF: 1 in, 1 out
Analog audio: 2 in, 2 out
Coaxial digital audio: 1 out
Optical digital audio: 1 out
Tech Talk HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Wasted Money, Time and DVDsOctober 2, 2009 Michael S. Banks(Chino Hills CA) This unit was great, for a few months. Then it decided it wasn't going to accept any DVDs, pre-recorded, blank, or it's own recordings.
My story is pretty much the same as the majority of the reviews I've read on this unit, here or on other review sites.
Wish I had read them first. Don't buy this unit, don't even use it for free. If you do, make sure you finalize every recording you make immediately.
Otherwise you've just wasted your time and DVD.

Worst electronic product ever purchasedJanuary 15, 2008 Global Zeitgeist(Washington, DC) This is the single worst electronic product that I have ever purchased. The unit quickly stopped reading most DVDs and was useless fairly early after purchase. I had good luck with Samsung in the past but will NEVER buy anything from them again.
Please DO NOT BUY! My 2nd unit now completely useless...January 1, 2008 C. Smith(Upstate NY) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this unit shortly after it was released. I had the original unit replaced after about 2 weeks because it wasn't playing back some DVD+R's that I had recorded AND finalized from that same recorder. It was also occasionally having difficulty with some commercial DVD's. It was necessary to eject and insert a few times to get them to play. The 2nd unit arrived and worked for 3 months and began to exhibit the same problems including scratchy CD playback that was not heard in my other standard DVD player. I called Samsung about replacement and they told me I would have to pay shipping to a repair facility where they may determine it could not be a warranty repair. I decided to tolerate the eject, re-eject issue and after 9 months it wouldn't recognize ANY commercial DVD's and only a few DVD+R's. I called Samsung back and, in short, they put me off over and over until the 1 year warranty had expired. It is now worthless and I am shopping for another, different manufacturer. I am reasonable but Samsung's customer service was rude and ineffective. I will never buy another of their products. I can't comment about other Samsung models but with this experience, I don't care to. Check reviews on the Web, you'll find that these units have a BAD history.
