Amazon.com Product Description
Samsung's two-tone silver/black DVD-R120 puts the power, quality, and convenience of digital video recording and playback at your fingertips. The stylish, slender component stands less than 3 inches tall but delivers everything from triple-format DVD recording (write-once DVD-R, rewritable DVD-RW, and random-access DVD-RAM) to progressive-scan video and playback of MP3 music and JPEG digital-photo files.

Front-panel audio/video inputs offer easy access for connecting external devices such as camcorders, DVRs, and VCRs, and the unit offers both analog and digital DV (FireWire IEEE 1394) inputs for high quality and great flexibility. Now you can edit and share your home-video archives with your family and friends.

Samsung uses its own multi-format technology that allows the DVD-R120 to support three digital recording formats: DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD-R. DVD-RAM is the most versatile format available to DVDs and can adapt to DVD-RW status for playback on older machines. The recorder's non-contact optical pick-up ensures that each disc will be scratch-free for repeated use. The DVD-RAM format also allows for mixed storage of video, audio, and other types of data from both the PC and AV worlds. The format's non-linear characteristics enable unique features like time-shifting and time-warping. This means you can start watching a program from the beginning while the middle or end is still being recorded. Write-once DVD-R media is widely compatible with other DVD players and PCs.

One-touch and timer recording offers extra convenience (initiating playback at 30 minutes and adding 30 minutes with each additional press of the button, up to the available disc time or 240 minutes, whichever is sooner), while digital noise reduction actually improves upon the quality of incoming interlaced video signals.

During playback, you'll also enjoy live picture pause and replay. And whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVD-R120 stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

Connections include 2 each composite- and S-video inputs (1 front and 1 rear) with accompanying stereo analog audio inputs (left/right RCA), 1 each composite-, S-video, and component-video outputs, and the component outs are selectable for either 480i or progressive 480p, depending on your TV. A choice of coaxial or optical digital-audio output facilitates hookup with an audio/video surround receiver for exciting multichannel surround sound from Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks.

What's in the Box
DVD player/recorder, a remote control, remote batteries, an audio/video cable, an RF video cable, a user's manual, and warranty/registration information.

1 out of 5 stars Biggest piece of crap ever!   October 19, 2009

Absolute junk. DO NOT BUY!!!! Okay, now that that is said, here's the breakdown. I needed a DVD recorder to put all the hours upon hours of VHS home movies I have (mostly the kids) onto DVD. Well, that IS what this is made for isn't it? I guess not, because no matter what you hook up to this, it triggers the anti-pirate code and screws up the picture horribly (black line down the center, all wiggly picture on each side of the black line.

If that's not bad enough, if you want to record a favorite program or sport event from TV, also forget that. The picture quality is the worst I've ever seen since the old days of rabbit ears and bad reception. Then, once you hit record, you get the screwed up picture again.

And after waiting for more than an hour and a half on hold to talk to customer service I was told, "yes we are aware of those issues. Also, yes any item plugged in activates the anti-pirate software." And added to that, "the unit does function as intended, and not being happy with the product does not warrant a refund".

So, even though the unit DOES NOT function as a DVD recorder in any way shape or form, I was stuck with it as a really expensive DVD player. Mosty DVD players which are of the same quality as this unit are about $25-$35, so I paid ten times that, but I guess I can say I paid that for a lesson. Don't buy Samsung junk and I am now slowly replacing all my electronic items that are Samsung with ones from companies that have better performance and customer service.

Too bad, I used to really like Samsung products.

1 out of 5 stars (Samsung DVD-R130) ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS THING LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!   April 9, 2009

This is actually about the Samsung DVD-R130, which is, I believe, an "Upgrade" of the R-120 (and if THIS is an "upgrade", I SHUDDER to think how the UNUPGRADED unit must perform). I have had NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS with this unit. I hardly uses it the first year (had very few DVD's), but after a year, the unit started having 'seizures': when getting to the end of a DVD, the picture would 'pixelate', and eventually just 'freeze'. I assumed it was my DISK that was the problem. So I tried other disks; virtually ALL did THE EXACT SAME THING. Then I went back to the first DVD that had the problem (Return of the Jedi); it would pixellate & freeze in the EXACT SAME SPOT. EVERY TIME. I tried cleaning the disk(s. No luck. I tried cleaning the MACHINE. No luck.

It has now reached a point where it is SO BAD, that the machine has complete freeze-ups; even UNPLUGGING it, the machine 'goes off', but you see a frozen picture even when it is OFF. I just tried a disk tonight: I had to unplug it & plug it back in at least a dozen times, and even THEN it wouldn't play that 1 DVD. And this has happened MANY times, sometimes unplugging-plugging in 25 times or more or until I just gave up.

I have read a NUMBER of reviews on this "product" on the 'net; they have not ONLY been nearly universally bad, but most have described the EXACT SAME problems I experienced.

Take my advice: STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THIS, OR ANY SAMSUNG DVD PRODUCTS AS YOU CAN!!! The only place this unit truly belongs is in a trash can. I wish that somebody would file a class action suit against Samsung for this piece of trash-I would opt into that suit without hesitation. As would most of the other consumers bilked into purchasing this electronic piece of garbage.

Cutting to the chase, this is the worst consumer electronic product I have ever owned. It refuses to play even brand new dvds, randomly decides what it can and cannot play, and forget about recording -- it won't even consider it no matter what format disc you try to use. I have suffered through many months of it and -- when my new Sharp unit arrives, I will be smashing this piece of $%@# with a hammer to sooth my soul. Do not buy this junk!

1 out of 5 stars Out of sync!   September 2, 2007
Robin Washington (Duluth, Minn.)
I bought one of these about 18 months ago. I *think* the first coupla dubs I made were OK, but then I noticed audio and video were out of sync. I thought it was me for the longest time (I'll spare you why) until two weeks ago. Then I did tests that absolutely confirmed it was the product. At that point I did what I should have done a long time ago, which is check user reviews for "Samsung" and "out of sync." Lights up like a Christmas tree.
This product is worthless and the company ought to have the decency to remove it from the market or at least inform its customers of the problem. Would never recommend to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars DVD -R's should not be disposable   August 11, 2007

We have had this unit for a little over a year - and we have to spend over $100 to have it repaired for its "system error" It has always been a little quirky to use and now it is just useless.

Off I go to purchase another and not a Samsung this time.
